The Powertrain Control Module, also known as PCM or JTEC, is a pre-programmed digital computer responsible for operating a vehicle’s engine control system. It acts as the “brains” of the engine, continuously adjusting its response to the changing input data and controlling various output devices. When the PCM malfunctions, it can cause issues throughout the engine. Fortunately, if a proper diagnosis indicates that replacing the PCM is the solution, it can be easily replaced to resolve the problem. In this guide, we will demonstrate how to replace a PCM ECM ECU Module on a 2002 Dodge Durango.

LOCATION

To initiate the replacement of your 2002 Dodge Durango’s PCM, begin by locating the module. You can find it in the engine compartment, towards the back and on the right, near the battery. Before we proceed, it’s crucial to ensure a safe replacement process. Make sure to turn off the ignition key and disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging the PCM connectors. Following this precaution will safeguard the PCM from potential voltage spike damage.

REMOVAL

Here’s a step-by-step guide for removing the PCM:

  1. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable from the battery.
  2. Remove the cover over the electrical connectors.
  3. Carefully unplug the 32-way connectors from the PCM.
  4. Remove the PCM mounting bolts and extract the PCM from the vehicle.

By following these instructions, you’ll be able to replace the PCM effectively.

Please follow these steps to replace the PCM in your vehicle:

  1. Reinstall the PCM and mounting bolts onto the vehicle.
  2. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 3–5 N·m (30–40 in. lbs.).
  3. Before reconnecting, inspect the PCM pins and the three 32-way connectors for any damage or corrosion. Ensure that each pin is of the same height. If there is no damage, continue.
  4. Reconnect the 32-way connectors.
  5. Install the cover over the electrical connectors.
  6. Reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery.
