{"id":291,"date":"2016-06-02T13:27:58","date_gmt":"2016-06-02T17:27:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fs1inc.com\/blog\/?p=291"},"modified":"2025-12-04T00:07:58","modified_gmt":"2025-12-04T05:07:58","slug":"air-cars-hydrogen-not-flying","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fs1inc.com\/blog\/air-cars-hydrogen-not-flying\/","title":{"rendered":"A Different Kind of Air Car, Even More Magical"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Air cars&#8230;no, not <a title=\"Be sure to check out the Terrafugia Transition in the same article (link at bottom)!\"><em>those<\/em><\/a> (though you&#8217;ll be sure to hear from us when that happens!) &#8212; we&#8217;re talking vehicles powered by the very air! \u00a0Specifically, grabbing hydrogen right from the air itself to power the engine&#8230;unbelievable? \u00a0Well, it <a title=\"The IEEE's Spectrum Reports...\">works<\/a> in the lab!<\/p>\n<p>In German culture (or is it &#8220;just&#8221; Yiddish?), there is the concept of the <em>Luftmensch<\/em>, someone who lives only on air &#8212; that is, needing nothing but air, only needing to breathe&#8230;someone impractical, in other words; a dreamer, even a n&#8217;eer-do-well (to the bourgeois, anyway)&#8230;so why not import the concept (ahem, vague pun clearly intended) and call these cars of the future air-cars, since they would similarly be fueled by the air!<\/p>\n<h4><em>Das Luftauto<\/em> &#8212; You Heard It Here First!<\/h4>\n<p>The air-car would work (&#8220;would&#8221; because scaling things from a proof-of-concept in the lab to something practical and economical to manufacture and sell are two different realities) by drawing hydrogen from the air in order to power itself. \u00a0It can only do this with a graphene-based mechanism, however, which was <a title=\"From the University of Manchester Itself!\">proven<\/a> to work but now needs to be made much more practical, more efficient.<\/p>\n<p>This is even better than a flying car, if you really think about it! \u00a0Especially in humid climes &#8212; and with global warming and ice sheets melting, that would seem to be quite the inevitable trend &#8212; where there is so much water in the very air, meaning there is so much hydrogen locked into the oxygen molecules&#8230;such air-cars would basically never run out of fuel! \u00a0And good clean water would be the only byproduct.
