The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is a digital computer that operates the engine control system of a vehicle. It is also known as JTEC. The PCM adjusts its response to the various output devices as the input data changes. If the PCM, the “brains” of the system, malfunctions, it can cause issues with the rest of the engine. Fortunately, if a proper diagnosis indicates that replacing the PCM is the solution, it can be easily replaced to resolve the problem. In this guide, we will walk you through the process of replacing the PCM ECM ECU Module on a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee.<\/p>\n

To begin the replacement of the PCM on your 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee, you will first need to locate the module. In that area, you might find a Transmission Control Module (TCM) which will need to be removed before replacing the PCM. Keep in mind that the coolant reserve\/overflow tank may obstruct your access, but you will find the PCM on the cowl panel in the right\/rear side of the engine compartment.<\/p>\n

REMOVAL<\/strong><\/b><\/h4>\n

1- Start by disconnecting the negative battery cable from the battery.<\/p>\n

2- If your vehicle is equipped with it, remove the Transmission Control Module (TCM).<\/p>\n

3- Proceed to remove the coolant reserve\/overflow tank.<\/p>\n

4- Next, take off the cover that is placed over the electrical connectors. This cover snaps onto the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).<\/p>\n

5- Carefully unplug the three 32-way connectors from the PCM.<\/p>\n

6- Remove the three mounting nuts that secure the PCM bracket to the vehicle’s body.<\/p>\n

7- Now, you can remove the PCM\/PCM bracket assembly itself from the vehicle.<\/p>\n

8- Lastly, remove the three bolts (screws) that connect the PCM to the PCM bracket.<\/p>\n

REPLACEMENT<\/strong><\/b><\/h4>\n

1- Check for damaged pins in the three 32\u2013way electrical connectors. If pins not damaged, continue.<\/p>\n

2- Install PCM to its mounting bracket. Tighten the three mounting bolts to 3 N\u00b7m (25 in. lbs.) torque.<\/p>\n

3- Install PCM\/PCM bracket to the body. Install the 3 nuts and tighten to 9 N\u00b7m (80 in. lbs.) torque.<\/p>\n

4- Install the three 32\u2013way connectors.<\/p>\n

5- Install cover over the electrical connectors. Cover snaps onto the PCM.<\/p>\n

6- Install the coolant reserve\/overflow tank.<\/p>\n

7- If it was equipped before, reinstall the Transmission Control Module (TCM).<\/p>\n

8- Reconnect the negative battery cable back to the battery.<\/p>\n
